This is a description of an earlier depiction (ca 1855) of the same painting. The train on the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad, completed in 1855, steams towards us, in contrast to the raft moving slowly upstream. The view is from the Pennsylvania shore of the Delaware River. The further shore is in New Jersey. In the distance is the Gap, through which the Delaware cuts into the Kittatinny Mountains. This picture is the first of several versions of this subject by the artist.
